Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
